NEW APPROACH to IMPROVING PERFORMANCE FOR INDIVIDUALS, TEAMS, ORGANISATIONS AND COMMUNITIES 4th April 2004 Sydney, Australia “We have reached the end of problem solving as a mode of inquiry capable of inspiring, mobilizing, and sustaining human system change.” So says, the founder of ‘Appreciative Inquiry’ (AI), Professor David Cooperrider, Case Western Reserve University. The new ‘positive psychology’ approach to improvement (AI) that has been widely and successfully used overseas in business, hospitals, schools and communities is being introduced to Australia in an on line conference being held over 3 days April 19 to 21. This superbly simple approach, called Appreciative Inquiry (AI), has a focus on strengths (rather than problems) and involves people, within organisations, asking questions (Inquiry) about things they appreciate such as their successes, values, hopes and dreams. It works because it taps into positive emotions and builds on what is already working. “Simply put, using the AI approach, people (in semi-structured conversations) discover ‘what already is working’ in order to imagine or dream ‘what could be’ and then design and deliver ‘what will be’. This approach, which has been extensively used overseas, engenders creativity, innovation and a high level of co-operation,” says, John Loty the President of the Sydney Chapter of ISPI, the organisation that is hosting this online conference. David Cooperrider and the CEO of Vodofone (Grahame Maher) will be joined by Bliss Browne, the founder of Imagine Chicago and other International and Australian AI practioners in this first online conference introducing ‘Appreciative Inquiry’ to the broader public in Australia.. As it is an on line conference you can participate from anywhere. and download any presentations you miss. The International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) is an international association dedicated to improving productivity and performance in the workplace.
